For a truly traditional and intimate experience of the forest, the Corbett Elephant Safari offers a unique way to traverse the wilderness. Unlike the noisy engine of a Jeep, riding atop a trained elephant allows for a much quieter and less disruptive journey, enabling closer observation of wildlife without alarming them. Elevated nine to ten feet above the ground, the perspective is unparalleled, giving you an advantage for spotting animals hidden in the tall grasses and crossing shallow river channels—terrain often inaccessible to vehicles. While Elephant Safaris are no longer permitted in the core safari zones for day visitors, they are still primarily conducted in the Corbett Landscape/Sitabani buffer zone, providing a memorable and scenic hour-long experience through the peripheral jungles and Kosi riverbed. This ride perfectly complements the Jeep or Canter safari, offering a timeless glimpse into the majesty of the Indian jungle.
The experience of the Elephant Safari at Corbett is defined by its tranquility and the commanding vantage point it provides. Sitting securely in the howdah on the elephant's back, you glide through the forest with minimal sound, leaving behind the dust and noise of mechanized travel. The experienced mahout guides the gentle giant through dense shrubbery and across riverine stretches, allowing you to focus completely on the sights and sounds of the jungle, from the subtle alarm calls of deer to the flash of vibrant bird plumage overhead. Though the activity is now mainly conducted in the Sitabani/Corbett Landscape area outside the main Tiger Reserve gates, it remains a favorite for families and those seeking a different, more serene pace of wildlife viewing, reminiscent of the park's early days.
